What is the name of the planet of the Daleks?

The story behind the answer

The name of the planet of the Daleks is Skaro. It is the fictional home world of the Daleks in Doctor Who, created by writer Terry Nation for the 1963 story “The Daleks.”

Skaro was originally inhabited by several intelligent species, including the Kaleds and the Thals. A thousand-year war and devastating nuclear radiation transformed the planet into a hostile, largely barren world. The Kaled scientist Davros later created the Daleks by combining the surviving Kaled mutants with armored travel machines.

Skaro is not the same planet as Gallifrey, which is the home world of the Time Lords and the Doctor. Mondas is another important Doctor Who planet, associated with the Cybermen, while Trenzalore is linked chiefly to the Doctor’s later history. These names are common mix-ups because all are major planets in the programme’s mythology.

Skaro has been destroyed, restored, hidden and revisited in different Doctor Who stories. Its changing status reflects the series’ complex continuity, but its identity as the Daleks’ home planet remains consistent.
