The planet-destroying battle station in "Star Wars" is the Death Star. Built by the Galactic Empire, this enormous spherical space station serves as both a superweapon and a symbol of Imperial control.

Its primary weapon is a superlaser capable of destroying a planet in a single blast. In the original 1977 film, Grand Moff Tarkin demonstrates its power by ordering the destruction of Alderaan, Princess Leia's home world. The first Death Star is eventually destroyed when Luke Skywalker fires proton torpedoes into a vulnerable exhaust port during the Battle of Yavin.

The name is sometimes confused with Star Destroyer, which is a large Imperial warship, or Star Forge, a weapon-producing space station from the Knights of the Old Republic video game storyline. The Empire later constructs a second Death Star, larger than the first, over the forest moon of Endor.
