What is the name of the orange ghost in Namco’s 1980 arcade game Pac-Man?

The story behind the answer

The orange ghost in Namco’s 1980 arcade game Pac-Man is named Clyde.

Clyde is one of the game’s four ghosts, alongside Blinky, Pinky, and Inky. In the original English naming, each ghost has a distinct color and behavior. Clyde is orange and is known for behaving differently from the ghosts that more directly pursue Pac-Man.

When far from Pac-Man, Clyde generally moves toward him, but when he gets close, he retreats toward the lower-left corner of the maze. This alternating behavior makes Clyde less predictable than a simple pursuer and gives the four ghosts complementary movement patterns.

The ghosts are central to Pac-Man’s design. Players must clear dots while reading their positions, using tunnels, and timing power pellets. Eating a power pellet temporarily makes the ghosts vulnerable, though that frightened state lasts for a limited period and becomes shorter as the level advances.
