What is the name of the NHL's top rookie award?
Answer
Calder Memorial Trophy
Answer
Calder Memorial Trophy
The NHL's top rookie award is the Calder Memorial Trophy.
The trophy is presented annually to the player judged the most proficient in his first NHL season. It was first awarded in 1933 and was named in memory of Frank Calder, the NHL's first president, who died in 1943. The Professional Hockey Writers Association selects the winner through a postseason vote.
Eligibility is stricter than simply being young or playing one's first NHL games. A player generally cannot have appeared in more than 25 games in a preceding season, or in six or more games in each of two preceding seasons. Since 1990–91, the player must also be younger than 26 on September 15 of the award season.
The Calder is often confused with the Hart Trophy, which honors the league's most valuable player, or the Art Ross Trophy, which goes to the regular-season scoring leader. The Selke Trophy instead recognizes the best defensive forward.
