What is the name of the NHL's annual award for the best rookie?

The story behind the answer

The NHL’s annual award for its best rookie is the Calder Memorial Trophy. It goes to the player judged the most proficient in his first NHL season, making it hockey’s official Rookie of the Year honor.

The trophy is named for Frank Calder, the NHL’s first president. Rookie honors began in the 1932–33 season, while the Calder Trophy itself was first presented after the 1936–37 season. After Calder died in 1943, the award was made permanent and renamed in his memory.

The Professional Hockey Writers’ Association votes for the winner. Modern eligibility rules generally limit a player’s previous professional experience and require the winner to be under 26 on September 15 of the award season. The Calder is distinct from the Vezina Trophy for goaltending, the Norris Trophy for defensemen, and the Hart Trophy for the league’s most valuable player.
