What is the name of the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V?

The multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V is called Grand Theft Auto Online.

Grand Theft Auto Online launched on 1 October 2013, shortly after the release of Grand Theft Auto V. It uses the same broad setting as the single-player game: the fictional state of San Andreas, including the city of Los Santos and its surrounding countryside.

Instead of controlling Michael, Franklin, or Trevor, players create a custom character and build a criminal career through jobs, races, businesses, cooperative missions, competitive modes, and heists. The online world was designed as a continuing service, with Rockstar Games adding new activities, vehicles, properties, and story content through updates.

“GTA Online” is the common short form, but it is not the full official name. Rockstar Online and Grand Theft Auto: Multiplayer are not the names of the mode. The service initially suffered major connection and character-progression problems at launch, but later updates expanded it into one of the most enduring multiplayer games associated with Grand Theft Auto V.
