Chess Kombat is the Mortal Kombat minigame built around chess-like battles.
It appears in Mortal Kombat: Deception, released in 2004. Rather than reproducing standard chess, the mode places Mortal Kombat fighters on a board divided into territories. Characters occupy roles comparable to chess pieces, and battles occur when opposing pieces meet.
The minigame combines board-game positioning with the series’ fighting mechanics. Its inclusion reflects Deception’s unusually broad set of side modes, which also included Puzzle Kombat and the adventure-focused Konquest mode.
Chess Kombat is not the same as Puzzle Kombat, where characters are represented in a puzzle-game format. It is also separate from Motor Kombat, a kart-racing minigame introduced in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
