Abstergo Industries is the modern-day organization that created the Animus in Assassin’s Creed.

Abstergo presents itself publicly as a powerful multinational corporation, but it is secretly controlled by the Templar Order. Its Animus technology reads genetic memories, allowing a user to experience events lived by ancestors. This device connects the modern-day plot with the historical adventures shown throughout the series.

The company appears in the original Assassin’s Creed through the character Desmond Miles, who is forced to use an Animus while held at an Abstergo facility. Abstergo’s research is intended to locate powerful artifacts and support the Templars’ long-term goals.

Abstergo Industries is not the same as the Assassin Brotherhood, the historical organization opposing the Templars. The First Civilization, also called the Isu, is an ancient precursor species whose technology is studied and exploited by both sides.
