The Animus is the memory device used in Assassin’s Creed’s modern-day story.
In the series, the Animus allows a person to relive genetic memories inherited from ancestors. The user lies inside the machine while its software reconstructs historical experiences, creating the playable settings of the games. Desmond Miles first uses an Animus under Abstergo Industries’ control in the original Assassin’s Creed.
The device is fictional, but the series uses it to connect modern characters with historical protagonists without presenting the stories as ordinary time travel. The Animus also gives the games a narrative explanation for restarting memories, synchronizing missions, and exploring reconstructed environments.
The Animus is distinct from the Apple of Eden, a Piece of Eden with powerful technological properties, and from Eagle Vision, an Assassin ability that highlights people and objects. Later stories introduce other systems, including Abstergo’s Helix entertainment platform.
