What is the name of the mascot of the 2016 Rio Olympics?
Answer
Vinicius
Answer
Vinicius
The mascot of the 2016 Rio Olympics was Vinicius.
Vinicius was designed to represent Brazilian wildlife, blending traits associated with cats, monkeys, and birds. São Paulo animation studio Birdo created the character for the Rio 2016 organizing committee.
The name was chosen through a public vote in December 2014. It honors Brazilian poet and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes, who co-wrote the bossa nova classic “The Girl from Ipanema” with composer Tom Jobim.
A common mix-up is Tom, which was not the Olympic mascot: Tom was the official mascot of the 2016 Paralympic Games. The two characters were unveiled together and their names won 44 percent of more than 323,000 votes. During Olympic wrestling, coaches even threw plush Vinicius dolls into the ring to challenge referee decisions.
