What is the name of the main stadium used for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

The story behind the answer

The main stadium used for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was the Japan National Stadium.

Located in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and served as the athletics venue during the Games. It was built on the site of the former National Stadium, which had been used for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The new stadium was inaugurated in December 2019, shortly before the Games.

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma designed the stadium, which replaced an earlier proposal by Zaha Hadid after concerns about cost and design. Its architecture incorporates extensive timber detailing inspired by traditional Japanese buildings, along with broad eaves intended to encourage natural airflow. The stadium was constructed with a capacity of roughly 68,000 in athletics configuration.

The Olympics were officially called the 2020 Summer Olympics even though they took place in 2021 after being postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the Games, the venue was commonly branded simply as the Olympic Stadium. That temporary competition name can cause confusion with both Tokyo's former National Stadium and other Olympic venues.
