What is the name of the main stadium at the Australian Open?
Answer
Rod Laver Arena
Answer
Rod Laver Arena
The main stadium at the Australian Open is Rod Laver Arena.
Located at Melbourne Park, Rod Laver Arena is the tournament’s centerpiece and the venue used for the biggest singles matches, including the finals. It opened in 1988 when the Australian Championships moved from Kooyong to the newly developed Melbourne Park precinct, then known as Flinders Park.
The arena was originally called the National Tennis Centre at Flinders Park before being renamed in honour of Rod Laver, the Australian champion who completed the men’s singles Grand Slam in 1962 and 1969. Its retractable roof, installed in 1988, allows play to continue during rain and extreme heat, while also enabling night sessions.
A common mix-up is Melbourne Park, which is the entire venue complex rather than one stadium. Margaret Court Arena is another major court within the complex, but Rod Laver Arena is the principal stadium and the traditional site of the Australian Open finals.
