What is the name of the magical sport played on broomsticks in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books?

The story behind the answer

Quidditch is the magical sport played on broomsticks in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books.

A Quidditch team has seven players: three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper and one Seeker. Chasers try to put the Quaffle through one of three opposing hoops, while Beaters use bats to hit Bludgers away from their teammates. The Seeker pursues the Golden Snitch.

Catching the Golden Snitch normally ends a match and awards 150 points to the Seeker’s team. That large value means catching it usually determines the winner, although the scoring rules allow unusual outcomes. The Keeper defends the team’s hoops.

Quidditch is played throughout the wizarding world and appears in every major period of Harry’s Hogwarts education. The sport also inspired real-world adaptations, including Muggle Quidditch, which later developed into the sport known as quadball.
