What is the name of the large Brutalist arts complex on the Barbican Estate?
Answer
Barbican Centre
Answer
Barbican Centre
The large Brutalist arts complex on the Barbican Estate is the Barbican Centre.
Designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the centre forms the cultural heart of the postwar Barbican development in the City of London. It occupies a complex of concrete terraces, elevated walkways and interconnected foyers, reflecting the architects’ ambition to create a complete urban environment rather than a standalone venue.
The centre officially opened to the public on 3 March 1982, several years after much of the surrounding housing estate was completed. Its facilities include the Barbican Hall, Barbican Theatre, cinemas, galleries, restaurants, libraries and a conservatory. The London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra are closely associated with its concert hall.
A common mix-up is confusing the Barbican Centre with the Barbican Estate. The estate is the wider residential and civic development; the Centre is its performing-arts and exhibition venue. Other London cultural complexes, including the Southbank Centre and Royal Festival Hall, are separate institutions.
