What is the name of the Klingon ritual for dishonor?

The story behind the answer

The Klingon ritual for dishonor is called discommendation. It is a formal punishment that strips a Klingon of social standing and marks the individual, and potentially their family, as dishonored.

In The Next Generation episode “Sins of the Father,” Worf accepts ritual discommendation after choosing to protect the Klingon Empire from civil war. Although his father, Mogh, was falsely accused of treason, publicly exposing the truth would have destabilized the Empire because the powerful House of Duras was involved. Worf therefore bears the dishonor himself.

Discommendation is not the same as Sto-vo-kor, the honored afterlife associated with glorious warriors. Nor is it a specific weapon ceremony such as a bat’leth ritual. A discommendated Klingon becomes a social outcast, though Klingon tradition may leave that person a right of vengeance against those responsible for the disgrace.
