What is the name of the king of the dwarves in The Hobbit films?

The story behind the answer

The king of the dwarves in The Hobbit films is Thorin Oakenshield. Known formally as Thorin II, he is the heir to Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, and leads the Company of Dwarves on its quest to reclaim their homeland from the dragon Smaug.

Thorin first appeared in J. R. R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel The Hobbit. His title, “Oakenshield,” comes from a battle in which he used an oak branch as a shield after his weapon was broken. He is the son of Thráin II and grandson of Thrór, making his claim to Erebor a matter of royal lineage as well as personal ambition.

Peter Jackson’s film trilogy expands Thorin’s history and emphasizes his rivalry with Azog and Thranduil. The character is more than a straightforward heroic king: his pride and fixation on the Arkenstone gradually become dangerous forms of possessiveness. He eventually recognizes his mistakes and makes peace with Bilbo before dying after the Battle of the Five Armies.

The other options are fellow dwarves or, in Thranduil’s case, an Elvenking. Dain Ironfoot succeeds Thorin as leader of Durin’s Folk.
