The first season of Survivor was filmed on Pulau Tiga, an island off the coast of Malaysian Borneo.
The season, later titled Survivor: Borneo, was filmed from March 13 to April 20, 2000. Sixteen contestants were divided into two tribes and spent 39 days on the island, competing for supplies, immunity, and ultimately the grand prize. The season premiered on CBS on May 31, 2000.
Pulau Tiga is often confused with Borneo because the island lies near the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo. Borneo is the large island and regional setting; Pulau Tiga is the specific filming location. Fiji and Palau became associated with later Survivor seasons, but neither was the site of the first season.
Richard Hatch won the inaugural season, defeating Kelly Wiglesworth in the final vote. The season was also sometimes known as Survivor: Pulau Tiga during early development and promotion.
