What is the name of the inn where the hobbits meet Aragorn in Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring?
Answer
The Prancing Pony
Answer
The Prancing Pony
The hobbits meet Aragorn at The Prancing Pony in Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The inn stands in Bree, a settlement where Men and hobbits live near the eastern edge of the Shire.
Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin stay at the inn during their journey east. Frodo uses the name Underhill, but the disguise is compromised when he accidentally puts on the One Ring and vanishes in front of the room’s guests. Aragorn, still calling himself Strider, then warns the hobbits about the dangers outside the inn.
The Prancing Pony is also connected with Barliman Butterbur, its forgetful but well-meaning landlord. It should not be confused with The Green Dragon, an inn in Bywater in the Shire. The Bree inn is important because it marks the transition from the familiar Shire to the more dangerous road toward Rivendell.
