What is the name of the inn in Bree where Frodo first meets Aragorn in Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring?

The story behind the answer

The inn in Bree where Frodo first meets Aragorn in Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring is The Prancing Pony.

The Prancing Pony is owned by Barliman Butterbur and stands in the town of Bree, a settlement inhabited by both Men and Hobbits. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin stay there while traveling east from the Shire under assumed names.

At the inn, Frodo uses the name “Mr. Underhill.” He accidentally draws attention to himself when he puts on the One Ring during a performance. Aragorn, who is using the name Strider, later offers to guide the Hobbits toward Rivendell.

The inn is also connected with the plot through Butterbur’s delayed delivery of Gandalf’s letter to Frodo. The Fellowship’s later journey makes The Prancing Pony an important transition point between the familiar Shire and the wider dangers of Middle-earth. It should not be confused with The Green Dragon, an inn in Hobbiton.
