What is the name of the inn at Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring?

The story behind the answer

The inn at Bree in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring is called The Prancing Pony.

The Prancing Pony is run by Barliman Butterbur and serves as an important meeting place in the early part of the novel. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin stay there after leaving the Shire, and Frodo encounters the mysterious ranger later revealed as Aragorn.

The inn’s location makes Bree a crossroads between the Shire, the eastern lands, and the old road. Butterbur’s delayed delivery of Gandalf’s letter contributes to the travelers’ uncertainty and helps set the story’s next events in motion.

The Green Dragon is a different inn in Hobbiton, associated with the Shire and with local hobbit gatherings. The Golden Perch is another inn mentioned in Tolkien’s wider setting, but it is not the famous Bree establishment.
