Chef Louis is the human chef who tries to cook Sebastian in Disney's 1989 The Little Mermaid.
Chef Louis appears at Prince Eric’s seaside castle. He discovers Sebastian in the kitchen and mistakes him for food, beginning a slapstick chase through pots, pans, and the preparation area. The sequence ends with Sebastian escaping rather than becoming part of the meal.
The character is voiced in the original English version by René Auberjonois, who also voiced Chef Louis in related Disney productions. His exaggerated French-inspired manner and the fast-paced kitchen action make the scene one of the film’s comic set pieces.
Chef Louis is not part of the central romance between Ariel and Eric, but the sequence reinforces the film’s recurring contrast between Ariel’s underwater world and human customs. Viewers sometimes confuse him with Maurice, Belle’s father in Beauty and the Beast, or with characters from other Disney kitchens.
