Bag End is the name of the house where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Shire.
Bag End is a comfortable hobbit-hole in Hobbiton, built into the Hill. Bilbo begins The Hobbit there, and Frodo later inherits the home before setting out on his journey in The Lord of the Rings. The house’s round door, pantry, rooms, and underground passages help establish the domestic character of hobbit life.
The name is a literal English expression for a dead-end location, and Tolkien also drew on local place-name associations from his own childhood near Birmingham. Bag End should not be confused with other important Hobbit settlements: Crickhollow is a house in Buckland, while Brandy Hall is the ancestral home of the Brandybucks.
