What is the name of the hobbit village where Frodo Baggins lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Hobbiton is the hobbit village where Frodo Baggins lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Hobbiton lies in the Shire, a peaceful region inhabited mainly by Hobbits. Frodo lives at Bag End, a comfortable smial built into a hill on the edge of the village. Bilbo Baggins also lives there before leaving the Shire, and the property later becomes the starting point for Frodo’s journey.

The village represents the ordinary, local world that contrasts with the dangers beyond the Shire. Tolkien describes Hobbiton through gardens, lanes, fields, inns, and familiar social customs. Its calm setting helps establish why Frodo and his companions initially seem unlikely figures for a world-changing quest.

Hobbiton should not be confused with Bywater, another nearby village, or Michel Delving, the chief town of the Westfarthing. Bree is farther east and is the location of the Prancing Pony, where the hobbits meet Aragorn. These places are all in or near the Shire but are distinct settlements.
