Hobbiton is the hobbit village where Frodo Baggins lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
Hobbiton lies in the Shire, a peaceful region inhabited mainly by hobbits. It is associated with Bag End, the hilltop home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. The village appears prominently in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, making it one of the best-known locations in Tolkien’s legendarium.
Hobbiton is not the name of the entire Shire. The Shire is the wider country, while Hobbiton is one settlement within it. Bree is another settlement, inhabited by both Men and hobbits, and Michel Delving is the chief town of the Westfarthing.
Tolkien’s descriptions of the Shire draw on rural English imagery, including lanes, fields, gardens and traditional village life. The contrast between Hobbiton’s domestic calm and the dangers beyond the Shire helps establish the scale of the quest undertaken by Frodo and his companions.
