Misty is the Cerulean City Gym Leader who specializes in Water-type Pokémon. In the original Kanto games, defeating her earns the player the Cascade Badge, the second Gym Badge in the usual journey through the region.
Misty’s Gym is located in Cerulean City, which the player reaches after traveling through Mt. Moon. Her team in the first-generation games includes Staryu and Starmie, with Starmie generally serving as her stronger and more difficult opponent. Water-type Pokémon make the battle especially challenging for players who arrive without Electric- or Grass-type attacks.
The other options belong to different Kanto Gyms. Brock leads the Pewter City Gym and uses Rock-type Pokémon, Lt. Surge leads Vermilion City’s Electric-type Gym, and Erika leads Celadon City’s Grass-type Gym. Their cities and specialties are frequent sources of confusion in beginner quizzes.
Misty also became one of the Pokémon anime’s best-known recurring characters. In that version of the story, she travels with Ash Ketchum and Brock before eventually returning to Cerulean City to run the family Gym.
