What is the name of the groundhog from Woodstock, Illinois?
Answer
Woodstock Willie
Answer
Woodstock Willie
The groundhog from Woodstock, Illinois, is named Woodstock Willie.
Willie is the local star of Woodstock’s Groundhog Day celebration, held in the city’s historic downtown square. Like other weather-predicting groundhogs, he is presented as a folkloric forecaster whose shadow supposedly indicates whether winter will continue.
Woodstock has an especially strong connection to the 1993 film Groundhog Day. Although the movie’s story is set in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, many of its outdoor scenes were filmed around Woodstock Square and nearby streets. The town later embraced that movie connection as part of its annual celebration and visitor culture.
Woodstock Willie is therefore not Punxsutawney Phil under another name. Phil belongs to the Pennsylvania tradition, while Willie represents Woodstock, Illinois. “Wiarton Willie,” meanwhile, is a different famous groundhog from Ontario, Canada.
