What is the name of the groundhog from Staten Island?

The story behind the answer

The groundhog from Staten Island is named Staten Island Chuck.

Staten Island Chuck is the official Groundhog Day groundhog associated with the Staten Island Zoo in New York City. Each February 2, the ceremony presents Chuck as the borough’s answer to better-known predictors such as Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania.

The name is a title used by successive groundhogs rather than a guarantee that the same animal has served forever. Chuck’s descendants and stand-ins have continued the tradition when an earlier animal died or could not appear. This is why reports may refer to female animals while still using the public name “Staten Island Chuck.”

Chuck became especially famous after biting Mayor Michael Bloomberg during the 2009 ceremony. Another widely reported episode occurred in 2014, when Mayor Bill de Blasio dropped Chuck’s successor, Charlotte; Charlotte died days later, prompting controversy and changes to later ceremonies.

The “Staten Island” part identifies the New York City borough, while “Chuck” is the groundhog’s established public name—not Willie, Sam, or Phil.
