What is the name of the great battle involving five armies in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

The great conflict at the end of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is the Battle of the Five Armies. It takes place near the Lonely Mountain after the death of the dragon Smaug and determines control of the surrounding region.

The five armies are the Dwarves, Elves, and Men who oppose the Orcs and Wargs. Thorin Oakenshield’s company reaches the mountain to reclaim the Dwarves’ treasure, but the arrival of other groups creates a tense dispute before the larger enemy threat appears.

Bilbo is present but does not dominate the battle; he is knocked unconscious and misses much of the fighting. The Battle of the Pelennor Fields belongs to The Lord of the Rings, while Dagorlad and Azanulbizar are earlier battles in Tolkien’s wider history.
