Goldberry is the golden-haired wife of Tom Bombadil in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Goldberry appears in The Fellowship of the Ring when Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin stay with Tom Bombadil and Goldberry in the Old Forest. She is introduced as the “River-woman’s daughter,” linking her to the nearby Withywindle and to the strange, nature-centered atmosphere of the region. Her home is peaceful and orderly, in contrast with the dangers the Hobbits have just encountered.
Goldberry is not one of the Elves, and she should not be confused with major Elven characters such as Galadriel, Arwen, or Lúthien. Tolkien deliberately leaves much about Goldberry and Bombadil unexplained. Their scenes emphasize song, seasonal beauty, hospitality, and an ancient power outside the main struggle over the One Ring. Goldberry’s brief appearance nevertheless makes her one of the most memorable figures in the early part of the quest.
