Answer
Gullinbursti
What is the name of the gold-bristled boar of Freyr? Gullinbursti is the magical boar associated with the fertility god Freyr.
The boar appears in the treasure-making episode of Snorri Sturluson’s Skáldskaparmál. After Loki wagers his head that the dwarf craftsmen Brokkr and Eitri cannot equal the gifts made by the Sons of Ivaldi, Eitri places a pig’s skin in a furnace while Brokkr works the bellows. Despite Loki’s interference, they produce Gullinbursti, whose shining bristles illuminate darkness.
The name Gullinbursti is commonly translated as “Golden Bristles” or “Gold Mane.” The boar is not merely an animal companion: it represents extraordinary craftsmanship and provides Freyr with a swift, supernatural mount. Some accounts say Freyr rides it, while another tradition describes him traveling to Baldr’s funeral in a chariot drawn by the boar.
A common mix-up is Hildisvíni, another boar connected with Freyja. Gullinbursti belongs specifically to Freyr. The boar is also known by the name Slíðrugtanni, usually translated “Sharp Tooth” or “Fearsome Tooth.”
