The giant who is the smallest of his kind in Roald Dahl’s The BFG is the BFG.
The BFG stands for Big Friendly Giant. Unlike the other giants, who eat human beings, he refuses to do so and instead catches dreams. He lives in Giant Country and becomes Sophie’s protector and friend after taking her from an orphanage.
Dahl published The BFG in 1982. The character had first appeared in an earlier form in Danny, the Champion of the World, where a “BFG” is mentioned in a bedtime story. The later book expanded the character into a full protagonist.
The BFG’s unusual speech is part of the book’s comedy. He uses invented expressions such as “whizzpoppers” and “snozzcumbers,” while Sophie speaks more conventionally. The other giants have names including Fleshlumpeater and Bloodbottler, but they are not the friendly giant asked about here.
