The giant boat in the biblical story of Noah is called the Ark.
The English word “ark” comes through Latin and Greek translations of the Bible and ultimately relates to a container or chest. In Genesis, the Hebrew term is tebah, a word also used for the basket in which the infant Moses is placed in Exodus. The name therefore emphasizes a vessel that preserves life rather than a named ship with a personal title.
The Ark of Noah is easily confused with the Ark of the Covenant, another biblical object. Noah’s Ark is a large flood vessel described in Genesis 6–9, while the Ark of the Covenant is a sacred chest associated with the Israelites and the wilderness tabernacle. They are separate objects with different stories, purposes, and Hebrew contexts.
