What is the name of the first Shrek film’s villain who rules Duloc?

The story behind the answer

Lord Farquaad is the villain who rules Duloc in the first Shrek film.

Farquaad is the ruler of Duloc, a highly regulated kingdom whose appearance and procedures parody theme-park design and authoritarian pageantry. He wants to become king, but the film explains that he must marry a princess to qualify. To pursue that goal, he sends Shrek to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded castle.

John Lithgow provides Farquaad’s voice. The character is deliberately short, and the film repeatedly uses that physical trait as part of its comedy. Farquaad’s name also resembles the phrase “far quad,” a joke connected to the character’s unusually small stature.

Farquaad is often confused with Prince Charming, another Shrek antagonist. Prince Charming is the son of Fairy Godmother and serves as an antagonist in Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. Farquaad, by contrast, is the principal human villain of the original 2001 film and is associated specifically with Duloc.
