What is the name of the first playable ship in Assassin's Creed III?

The story behind the answer

Aquila is the name of the first playable ship in Assassin's Creed III. The schooner belongs to Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, and becomes a major tool during the game's naval missions.

Assassin's Creed III is set during the American Revolution. Connor uses the Aquila to travel along the North American coast and to fight enemy vessels, while the player can improve the ship's hull, guns, and other equipment.

The Aquila is not the same vessel as the Jackdaw, which belongs to Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The Morrigan belongs to Shay Cormac in Assassin's Creed Rogue, making it another commonly confused ship name.

Naval gameplay in Assassin's Creed III helped establish the ship-based mechanics that Black Flag later expanded into a much larger seafaring experience. In the series' fictional lore, the ship's name comes from the Latin word for eagle.
