Telperion is the first of the Two Trees of Valinor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology. It produced silver light and was created by the Vala Yavanna in the land of Valinor.
The second tree, Laurelin, produced golden light. Their radiance illuminated Valinor before the making of the Sun and Moon, and the Valar measured time through alternating periods of silver and gold light.
The destruction of the Trees by Melkor and the monstrous spider Ungoliant became one of the central tragedies of the First Age. Their last flower and fruit were used to create the Moon and Sun, while the surviving light of the Trees was preserved in the Silmarils.
