What is the name of the first Assassin's Creed game starring a female protagonist, released for the PlayStation Vita in 2012?

The story behind the answer

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation is the first Assassin's Creed game starring a female protagonist, released for the PlayStation Vita in 2012.

The protagonist is Aveline de Grandpré, a mixed-race Assassin operating in 18th-century New Orleans and the Louisiana region. Her story takes place during the period of French and Spanish influence in the colony and overlaps historically with the era of Assassin's Creed III.

Aveline uses disguises as part of her missions, including outfits associated with a lady, a slave, and an Assassin. These identities affect how she moves through society and what kinds of actions are available, making social position a central gameplay idea.

Liberation first launched on the PlayStation Vita in 2012 and was later ported to other platforms. Syndicate features Evie Frye as a major female protagonist, but it was released later, in 2015. Liberation should also not be confused with Freedom Cry, whose lead character is Adewale.
