What is the name of the fictional world visited by Ransom in C.S. Lewis’s Perelandra?

The story behind the answer

The fictional world visited by Ransom in C.S. Lewis’s Perelandra is Perelandra.

Published in 1943, Perelandra is the second novel in Lewis’s Space Trilogy, following Out of the Silent Planet and preceding That Hideous Strength. In the story, Elwin Ransom is transported to the planet Perelandra, which is also called Venus in the trilogy’s fictional cosmology.

The novel presents a newly created world dominated by ocean, floating islands, and a pair of human inhabitants. Ransom becomes involved in a struggle surrounding temptation, obedience, and the future of the planet. The setting differs sharply from Malacandra, the Mars-like world of the first novel.

The titles and planetary names are easy to mix up. Malacandra belongs to Out of the Silent Planet, while Perelandra is the world of the second volume. Thulcandra is Lewis’s name for Earth in the trilogy.
