What is the name of the fictional wizarding school founded by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

Hogwarts is the fictional wizarding school founded by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in Scotland and serves as the main educational setting for most of the novels. Harry Potter begins attending at age eleven, joining one of four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.

The school was founded by four medieval witches and wizards: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. Each founder established a house reflecting different qualities, and the Sorting Hat assigns new students to them.

Hogwarts is not the only wizarding school in Rowling’s wider world. Beauxbatons and Durmstrang appear in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, while Ilvermorny is associated with North American wizarding education. Hogwarts remains the principal school of the original novels.
