What is the name of the fictional university in Lovecraft's stories?
Answer
Miskatonic University
Answer
Miskatonic University
The fictional university in Lovecraft’s stories is Miskatonic University. It is located in Arkham, a fictional city in Massachusetts, near the equally fictional Miskatonic River.
The university first appeared in Lovecraft’s serial story Herbert West–Reanimator, written and published in 1921–1922. It later became one of the most important institutions in the Cthulhu Mythos. In The Dunwich Horror, Miskatonic is presented as an elite university comparable to Harvard, while other stories use its scholars and expeditions to investigate forbidden or supernatural subjects.
Its library is especially famous for occult works, including a fictional copy of the Necronomicon, along with the Book of Eibon and Unaussprechlichen Kulten. The university’s name may have been inspired by Algonquian-rooted New England place names or by the real Housatonic River. Readers sometimes confuse Miskatonic University with Arkham: Arkham is the city, while Miskatonic is the institution within it.
