Lothlórien is the fictional realm ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Lothlórien is a forest realm east of the Misty Mountains, near the River Anduin. It is inhabited mainly by the Galadhrim, Elves whose culture and language differ in important ways from those of Rivendell’s Elves. Galadriel and Celeborn govern the realm from Caras Galadhon, a city built among the mallorn trees.
The Fellowship rests in Lothlórien after escaping Moria. Galadriel gives each member a gift, including the Phial that later helps Frodo against Shelob. The name is often shortened to Lórien, although Tolkien’s texts also use other historical forms. Lothlórien should not be confused with Rivendell, which is Elrond’s refuge farther north and west of the Misty Mountains.
