What is the name of the fictional planet where C.S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra takes place?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra takes place on the fictional planet Perelandra.

Perelandra is the second novel in Lewis’s Space Trilogy and was published in 1943. In the story, Perelandra is the name used for Venus, and Elwin Ransom travels there to confront a spiritual and moral crisis in a newly created world. The planet’s environment differs radically from Earth, with floating lands and an oceanic setting that shapes the inhabitants’ lives.

The novel draws on the biblical story of temptation while developing its own planetary mythology. Ransom meets the Green Lady, one of Perelandra’s first human inhabitants, and faces an antagonist seeking to persuade her to disobey a divine prohibition.

Perelandra is easily confused with Malacandra, the planetary name for Mars in Out of the Silent Planet. Narnia belongs to a separate fantasy sequence, while Glome is the kingdom in Lewis’s novel Till We Have Faces. These names identify different fictional settings in Lewis’s work.
