Malacandra is the fictional planet inhabited by the eldila in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. In modern astronomical terms, Malacandra corresponds to Mars.
The name appears especially in Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938. The protagonist, Elwin Ransom, is taken to Malacandra, where he encounters several intelligent species and learns that Earth is known as Thulcandra, the silent planet.
The trilogy combines planetary romance, theology, and speculative fiction. Its second novel, Perelandra, is set on a fictional version of Venus, while That Hideous Strength returns to Earth. The names can be confused because Lewis gives both real planets and invented names important roles.
