Quenya is the fictional language associated with the High Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works.
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his extensive work in invented languages. Its structure and sound patterns were influenced especially by Finnish, while other Elvish languages drew on different linguistic inspirations. Quenya is associated with the Noldor and other high Elves and is often described within the fiction as an ancient or formal language.
Sindarin is the most important distinction to remember. It became the everyday Elvish language of many Elves in Middle-earth, particularly in Beleriand and later realms. Quenya remained strongly connected with tradition, ceremony, poetry, and historical memory.
Khuzdul is the secret language of the Dwarves, while the Black Speech was created by Sauron for servants of Mordor. Tolkien’s linguistic construction was central to his storytelling: he often created peoples, histories, and names around the languages themselves rather than treating language as a decorative afterthought.
