What is the name of the fictional language spoken by many Elves in Tolkien’s mythology and based partly on Finnish?

The story behind the answer

Quenya is the Tolkien language spoken by many Elves and developed partly from the sound and structure of Finnish.

Tolkien began creating Quenya during the early twentieth century. He drew inspiration from several languages, especially Finnish, while also giving Quenya its own grammar, vocabulary, history, and internal evolution. In his mythology, Quenya is associated particularly with the Noldor and the High Elves.

Quenya and Sindarin are often confused because both are major Elvish languages in Tolkien’s legendarium. Sindarin became the everyday Elvish language of many characters in Middle-earth, while Quenya had a more formal, historical, or ceremonial role by the time of The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien was a professional philologist, and his invented languages were not merely collections of decorative words. He created sound changes, grammatical relationships, and fictional histories for them. The linguistic design often came first, with stories and peoples developing around the languages.
