Quenya is the fictional language created by Tolkien and inspired mainly by Finnish.
Tolkien developed Quenya as one of the major languages of the Elves in his mythology. He built it with a detailed sound system, vocabulary, and grammar rather than using it merely as a collection of decorative words. In the mythology, Quenya was associated especially with the Noldor and with the ancient traditions of the Elves.
Finnish was a major inspiration for Quenya’s structure and sound, while Greek and Latin also influenced aspects of Tolkien’s language-making. The language appears in names, poems, inscriptions, and ceremonial phrases throughout Tolkien’s writings.
Quenya is often confused with Sindarin, another important Elvish language. Tolkien based Sindarin’s sound partly on Welsh, and it became the everyday Elvish language of many characters in Middle-earth. Quenya was instead presented as an older, more formal language in much of the later setting.
