Quenya is the fictional language created by J.R.R. Tolkien for the Elves and associated with the meaning “high-elven.”
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his extensive language-making project. Its sound and structure were influenced especially by Finnish, and Tolkien connected it with the High Elves, including the Ñoldor and Vanyar. In his mythology, Quenya is an ancient and prestigious language of the Elves.
The language appears in names, poetry, songs, and ceremonial expressions throughout Tolkien’s legendarium. “Quenya” itself is related to the Elvish idea of speech or language. Tolkien continued refining its vocabulary and grammar for much of his life, so published materials do not form a single complete conversational course.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language and became more widely spoken in much of Middle-earth during the Third Age. Westron is the Common Speech, while Khuzdul is the secret language of the Dwarves. These distinctions make Quenya more specific than the general answer “Elvish.”
