What is the name of the fictional land where Frodo Baggins lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s books?

The story behind the answer

The Shire is the fictional land where Frodo Baggins lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s books.

The Shire is a peaceful, largely rural region in the north-west of Middle-earth, inhabited mainly by Hobbits. Frodo lives at Bag End in Hobbiton, while Bilbo Baggins also makes his home there. The Shire’s farms, villages, inns, and preference for ordinary domestic life contrast sharply with the wars and ancient powers beyond its borders.

At the beginning of The Lord of the Rings, Frodo leaves the Shire carrying the One Ring. The journey eventually takes him through Rivendell, Moria, Gondor, and Mordor. After the War of the Ring, the Hobbits return to find the Shire damaged by the rule of Saruman’s agents, leading to the events known as the Scouring of the Shire.

The Shire is not the whole of Middle-earth and is not synonymous with Hobbiton. Hobbiton is one settlement within the Shire, while Bag End is a particular Hobbit-hole in Hobbiton.
