The Overlook Hotel
Answer
The Overlook Hotel
The fictional hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is the Overlook Hotel.
In the 1980 film, Jack Torrance accepts a winter caretaker position at the isolated Colorado hotel. He moves there with his wife Wendy and son Danny, whose psychic ability allows him to perceive disturbing events connected with the building.
The Overlook is central to the film’s atmosphere and plot. Its empty corridors, hedge maze, ballroom and Room 237 became defining images of horror cinema. The movie was adapted from Stephen King’s 1977 novel, although Kubrick changed several characters, events and details.
The exteriors used for the Overlook were filmed at Timberline Lodge in Oregon, while many interior sets were built at Elstree Studios in England. Timberline Lodge requested that filmmakers not identify a specific room as Room 217, so the film used Room 237 instead.
