The country’s extraordinary wealth and technology come largely from vibranium, a fictional metal that arrived in Wakanda through a meteorite. Wakandan scientists use it in advanced medicine, transportation, communications, weapons, and protective clothing. This makes Wakanda one of the most technologically advanced societies in the Marvel Universe.
Wakanda first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 in 1966, alongside Black Panther’s early comic-book history. It is not Atlantis, which is associated with Namor, nor Latveria, the European nation ruled by Doctor Doom. Genosha is another fictional country connected primarily with the X-Men.
