Cyberpunk 2077 mainly takes place in the fictional city of Night City.
Night City is a major location in Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk universe and serves as the game's open-world setting. It is presented as an independent city on the California coast, dominated by powerful corporations, competing gangs, mercenaries, and advanced technology.
The game divides the metropolis into districts with different identities, including Watson, Westbrook, Heywood, Santo Domingo, Pacifica, and the City Center. The expansion Phantom Liberty adds the Dogtown area, which is located within Night City's wider setting.
Night City is not the same as a real-world city and should not be confused with the futuristic locations in other cyberpunk fiction, such as Los Angeles in Blade Runner or New Angeles in Android: Netrunner. Its name and history come from Pondsmith's tabletop setting.
